A Message from the Chief Executive

SukHong Park, Chief Executive Officer of JangWon SM Co., Ltd.

Thank you for visiting JangWon SM Co., Ltd.

I started this company in July 2000. I am an engineer by training: I studied naval architecture and ocean engineering at Seoul National University, I hold a doctorate in engineering from Mokpo National University and a Korean Professional Engineer license in fluid machinery, and I am a licensed technology consultant. Before founding the company I spent close to two decades in industry — ship and offshore piping design and commissioning at Daewoo Shipbuilding, then static and rotating equipment engineering and project management at Daewoo Engineering.

Our work has stayed close to that background. From 2001 we engineered cargo handling and reliquefaction systems for LNG and LPG carriers, cargo tank VOC reduction systems and fuel gas supply equipment, most of it with DSME; the last of the VOC reduction installations was completed in 2019. Between 2001 and 2022 we designed, built and installed measuring, vision and material recovery equipment for the POSCO works at Pohang and Gwangyang. From April 2012 to March 2015 we carried out a three-year shipyard competency and technology transfer contract for Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine in Qatar. We also represent Chinese manufacturers in the Korean market.

Most of what we supply was developed together with the customer rather than sold from a catalog: the cargo tank VOC reduction system with DSME, the crop measuring vision system with the POSCO research center, conveyor cargo recovery equipment under a national purchase-conditional development program, and SF6 treatment equipment with university partners in Korea and Japan. The conveyor work produced four Korean patents of our own, registered between 2007 and 2011; the VOC reduction and vision technologies we use under licenses granted by DSME and by POSCO. Our research and development unit in Anyang is registered with the Korea Industrial Technology Association.

We are a small company and we work that way by choice. Each project is staffed for what it actually needs. For the Qatar contract we brought together retired specialists from Korea’s three largest shipyards — DSME, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries — and put them on the panel line alongside the yard’s own people. The same principle applies to every assignment: agree the scope first, then build the team for it.

As of our last project record, compiled in June 2022, our customers included POSCO and DSME in Korea, the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company and the Ibaizabal Group as owners, and Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine in Qatar.

Our working rule has not changed since 2000: nothing comes before the customer’s benefit. If you have a requirement in these fields, please write to us. We will tell you directly whether we can do it.

Sincerely,
SukHong Park
Chief Executive Officer
JangWon SM Co., Ltd.

All four patents cover the bulk cargo recovery and conveyor belt cleaning equipment. JWSM’s other main systems are used under licenses granted by their owners: the DE-VOC cargo tank VOC reduction technology is patented by DSME and licensed to JWSM after five years of joint development, and POSCO granted JWSM a license to the miss-crop detection vision technology developed with its research center.

The company also holds two registered software programs: a rolling crop shape detection program (No. 2004-01-12-2479) and a VOC reduction control program (No. C-2014-020791).
